You’ll soon see Jennifer Aniston take on one of her most emotionally complex roles to date. She’s stepping into the world of former child star Jennette McCurdy, portraying a deeply flawed, controlling mother in a new Apple TV+ series inspired by McCurdy’s explosive memoir, I’m Glad My Mom Died.

Norman Jean Roy

The show has been greenlit for a 10-episode run, and it promises a raw, emotional ride filled with dark humor and painful truths. This project marks a bold creative move for both Aniston and Apple, blending star power with deeply personal storytelling.

The official description reveals that the series is a “heartbreaking and hilarious recounting of Jennette McCurdy’s struggles as a former child actor while dealing with her overbearing, domineering mother (Aniston).”

At the heart of the story is the codependent relationship between an 18-year-old actress starring in a popular children’s show and her narcissistic mother, who lives for her role as “a starlet’s mother.” As a viewer, you can expect a narrative that cuts deep into the realities of fame, parental pressure, and the emotional costs of growing up in the spotlight.

McCurdy rose to fame with her role on Nickelodeon’s iCarly, and she appeared in a number of other television shows and films throughout her career. Her 2022 memoir, published by Simon & Schuster, became a cultural phenomenon. I’m Glad My Mom Died soared to the top of the New York Times Best Seller list and remained there for over a year.

The book’s frank exploration of abuse, trauma, and identity struck a chord with readers around the world and now serves as the foundation for this emotionally charged series.

Behind the scenes, McCurdy is taking full creative control of the adaptation. She is co-writing, executive producing, and showrunning the series alongside Ari Katcher, whose past credits include Ramy and The Jerrod Carmichael Reality Show. Jennifer Aniston joins as both the lead actress and executive producer, working through her Echo Films production banner.

Their collaboration brings together two women with vastly different experiences in Hollywood, both contributing to a powerful new voice on screen.

The production is stacked with talent across the board. Sharon Horgan and Stacy Greenberg are executive producing under the Merman banner, known for creating character-driven and emotionally resonant content. Additional executive producers include Dani Gorin, Tom Ackerley, and Josey McNamara from LuckyChap Entertainment—Margot Robbie’s company, known for taking on bold, female-centered stories.

Jerrod Carmichael and Erica Kay also lend their voices to the production team. Apple Studios will handle the overall production, ensuring the series meets the high standards you’ve come to expect from the platform.

This new role further strengthens Aniston’s partnership with Apple TV+. She already stars in and executive produces The Morning Show, a hit drama that’s returning for its fourth season this September. Her performance on the show has earned her two Emmy nominations and two Golden Globe nominations, reinforcing her continued relevance and range in the streaming era.

With I’m Glad My Mom Died, Aniston is taking on a character vastly different from her previous roles, offering you a chance to see a new side of the beloved actress.

Apple TV+ has also built a strong working relationship with Sharon Horgan, who developed the acclaimed series Bad Sisters for the platform. The second season of that show is set to air in late 2024. Horgan’s involvement in this project continues Apple’s trend of supporting bold, emotionally driven storytelling, especially when led by women. As a viewer, you benefit from this commitment through layered narratives and unforgettable performances.

The team behind the series is represented by some of the biggest agencies and firms in the entertainment industry. McCurdy is repped by CAA, Jill Fritzo PR, and Hansen, Jacobson. Aniston is represented by CAA, Lighthouse Management & Media, and Hansen Jacobson. Sharon Horgan is represented by United Agents in the UK and WME in the United States, along with Nelson Davis.

LuckyChap is represented by Entertainment 360, CAA, Narrative, and attorney Jeff Bernstein. Ari Katcher is represented by WME, Entertainment 360, and Ziffren Brittenham. Jerrod Carmichael is repped by WME, Entertainment 360, and Johnson Shapiro Slewett & Kole.

With a deeply personal story, powerhouse creative team, and major star attached, this series promises to be one of the most compelling offerings on Apple TV+ to date. You’ll find a story that’s at once heartbreaking, brutally honest, and surprisingly funny—just like the memoir that inspired it. Whether you read the book or not, this is a show that will stay with you long after the credits roll.
