Goiter refers to the enlargement of the thyroid gland, a small butterfly-shaped gland located at the base of your neck just below your Adam's apple. This condition manifests itself through various symptoms and signs which can often be overlooked or missed. The first noticeable sign of a goiter is a visible swelling at the base of your neck which might grow gradually or suddenly, depending on the cause. Other identifiable symptoms include a tight feeling in the throat, hoarseness, coughing, difficulty swallowing or breathing, and in severe cases, the swelling can be large enough to affect your voice. However, some goiters can be small and not produce any symptoms (asymptomatic). These are typically discovered during physical examination or diagnostic tests for other conditions.
A multitude of factors can cause thyroid swelling or goiter. The leading cause is iodine deficiency, commonly found in developing countries where iodine is lacking in the diet. Other causes include thyroid cancer, Hashimoto's disease (an autoimmune disorder), excessive production of thyroid hormones (hyperthyroidism), insufficient production of thyroid hormones (hypothyroidism), nodules (benign lumps in the thyroid), and pregnancy, where a hormone called human chorionic gonadotropin can cause the gland to enlarge.
Recognizing these indicators and understanding the risks early is crucial. If left untreated, goiters can lead to complications like difficulty breathing or swallowing, and in rare cases, cause thyroid cancer.
