According to an energy expert, managing the temperature of various rooms in a home can mitigate the risk of condensation and consequently prevent the occurrence of mould. Temperature regulation is crucial because condensation, which is a typical cause of mould, often occurs when warm air encounters a cold surface. Mold not only affects the aesthetic appeal of a home but poses health risks as well.
A room-by-room approach is advised to optimally regulate temperature. The expert says the optimal temperature for a bedroom should be around 15-18 degrees Celsius, as the lower temperature is not only suitable for a good night's sleep but also reduces the possibility of condensation build-up. The kitchen, which is often warmer due to the use of cooking appliances, should be kept slightly cooler, around 16-18 degrees Celsius as excess heat can lead to higher levels of humidity.
Furthermore, living rooms should be maintained at about 18-21 degrees Celsius, as this is a comfortable range for daily activities. Bathrooms, known to be a breeding ground for mold due to the high humidity and moisture content, should be kept at a slightly higher temperature, around 22-24 degrees Celsius, to ensure a warm surface and reduce condensation. Hence, the use of heated floors or towel rails is advised.
To conclude, maintaining an optimal temperature in each room is key to reducing the risk of condensation and, by extension, the occurrence of mould. While the specific temperature can vary with personal preference and usage, a cooler bedroom and kitchen, a comfortably warm living room, and slightly warmer bathroom are the expert's recommended ranges.
